WHY DO I NEED TO HAVE AN INITIAL CONSULTATION BEFORE COMMENCING TREATMENT?

The initial consultation is a chat that we have before you begin treatment where we give you information about the course of the treatment and what you can do yourself to become pregnant. We talk about the type of treatment we recommend for you and what your thoughts are. If you would like to use donor semen, then we will discuss the ethical aspects of becoming pregnant in this way.

You can use the consultation to ask all the questions you have and tell us about what you want in relation to the treatment.

WILL THE CONSULTATION TAKE PLACE AT VITANOVA?

We prefer to have consultations at Vitanova because we feel that meeting face to face helps improve communication. You will have the opportunity to see the clinic and to meet us in person.

It is also possible to hold the initial consultation over Skype as this also allows us to see each other face to face.

SHOULD MY PARTNER ATTEND THE INITIAL CONSULTATION?

It is best if both you and your partner are together throughout the entire process. Emotionally, it is very important and you will both be informed about what happens during the course of treatment. Following the consultation, your partner will also be required to sign our treatment consent form. If your partner's semen is going to be used in the treatment, then we will ask for a semen sample so that we can form an impression about the semen quality.

WHAT LANGUAGES DO THE VITANOVA STAFF SPEAK?

All of the staff at Vitanova speak both Danish and English. Some of us also speak Swedish, German, French, Italian, Arabic and Croatian.

We can't promise that you will always be able to meet with someone who speaks your language, but this isn't usually a problem.

CAN SINGLE WOMEN BE TREATED WITH INSEMINATION?

Yes, Danish legislation provides equality of access for single women, heterosexual and lesbian couples.

CAN LESBIAN WOMEN BE TREATED WITH INSEMINATION?

Yes, Danish legislation provides equality of access for single women, heterosexual and lesbian couples.

CAN A COUPLE RECEIVE TREATMENT IF THE MAN’S SEMEN IS OF POOR QUALITY?

Yes, we can provide treatment using donor sperm if the partner has poor quality semen or even just if this is a preference of yours, for example in cases where there is a history of hereditary disease in the partner's family. You must both sign a consent form declaring that you have chosen to use donor semen.

IUI AND POOR QUALITY PARTNER SEMEN?

In some cases we experience good results with IUI even though the partner has poor quality semen. During IUI, the semen is 'washed' in a laboratory, so only the best and most motile sperm cells are left. These sperm cells are perfectly able to fertilise an egg and during IUI we inject them directly into the uterus and place them close to the egg, practically speaking.

IUI WITH SEMEN FROM SOMEONE I KNOW?

Yes, this is certainly an option. The man who plans on being your donor will be treated in the same way as a sperm donor from the sperm bank. That means that he must undergo the same tests, blood samples, and semen analysis, plus answer a questionnaire in which he must disclose whether he, or his family, have any hereditary diseases.

If you are a couple who would like to use semen from a known donor, then he will be regarded as a donor in relation to all legal and financial aspects concerning the child.

If you are a single woman and wish to use a known donor, then legally he will NOT be regarded as a donor, but as the father.

HORMONE STIMULATED CYCLE AND IUI?

We usually recommend hormone stimulation if:
- The woman has low AMH and high FSH
- The woman has undergone multiple IUI treatments without pregnancy
- The woman has PCOS or a tendency for this

That said, whether you wish to use hormones or not will always be an individual decision.

CAN BODY TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS BE USED TO PLAN IUI?

We discourage the use of body temperature measurement as an indicator for when IUI should be performed. It is an uncertain method and you will not receive optimal treatment.

CAN OVULATION SYMPTOMS BE USED TO PLAN IUI?

We discourage this, as the subjective symptoms cannot provide us precise enough indications that the IUI will be successful. Ovulation symptoms may be valuable in conjunction with you taking ovulation tests.

CAN I RELY ON THE OVULATION TEST?

In most cases, the ovulation test is reliable enough. However, it is best that you try it several times before beginning the treatment process so that you can familiarise yourself with the tests. Some women never see a positive result on this test even when they are ovulating. We will advise you during the process and it is important that you contact us if you have any doubts about when you need to start the test and how often you should take the test.

WHICH OVULATION TEST SHOULD I PURCHASE?

A disposable digital test that measures LH.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE THE TEST?

We will give you advice on this during the initial consultation. You must take the test both in the morning and in the evening. Once you get a positive outcome you should then stop taking the test. Contact us when you get a positive result and we will make an appointment for you to undergo treatment.

WHAT IS FOLLICLE MONITORING/ULTRASOUND?

Follicle monitoring (measurement) is performed via ultrasound scans 2–3 times during the cycle, and shows how the follicles are developing. It is the most precise way of predicting when IUI should take place.

DOES THE ULTRASOUND SCAN INDICATE EGG QUALITY?

An ultrasound scan can only show the follicle size and whether it is growing, not whether the quality is good enough for fertilisation.

CAN SOMEONE ACCOMPANY ME TO MY INSEMINATION APPOINTMENT?

Yes, it is a very good idea to have someone accompany you to your insemination appointment. It is reassuring to speak to somebody about the experience of receiving treatment and possibly becoming pregnant.

IS IUI PAINFUL?

IUI can be compared to a gynaecological examination. Women generally do not feel any pain. We use a disposable lighted speculum. This is so that the person treating you can see where the cervix is and insert the catheter where it encounters the least resistance. Some women may experience certain menstruation-like symptoms once the catheter is inside the uterus.

SHOULD I REFRAIN FROM EATING BEFORE IUI?

No, on the contrary; it is important to eat and drink before an IUI.

AM I GUARANTEED TO GET PREGNANT THROUGH IUI?

No, unfortunately not. Pregnancy cannot be guaranteed from IUI, IVF or from intercouse.

IS THERE A RISK OF TWIN PREGNANCY ASSOCIATED WITH IUI?

There is always a small risk of twin pregnancy, regardless of the method you use to become pregnant.

IS THERE A RISK OF ECTOPIC PREGNANCY ASSOCIATED WITH IUI?

There is always a small risk of ectopic pregnancy, regardless of the method you use to become pregnant. The IUI treatment does not increase the risk if it is ascertained that there is free passage in the fallopian tubes.

CAN I UNDERGO IUI IF THERE IS FREE PASSAGE IN ONLY ONE OF THE FALLOPIAN TUBES?

We do not advise you to undergo IUI if there is free passage in only one of your fallopian tubes. If this is the case then your chances of getting pregnant will be greater via IVF.

WILL I HAVE TO REST AFTER IUI?

This is not necessary from a physical perspective. The semen will be injected directly into the uterus and it will not leak out. You may therefore carry on with your usual activities just as you would after regular intercourse. Movement increases blood flow to the uterus and this only has positive benefits in terms of encouraging implantation.

CAN I EXERCISE AFTER IUI?

You can carry on with your normal daily activities. That said, we would advise against swimming or high impact exercises for the first few days after insemination. It is best that your pulse does not exceed 100 beats per minute.

CAN I HAVE SEX WITH MY MALE PARTNER/BOYFRIEND AFTER IUI?

Yes, so long as you do not experience any pain. You must use a condom if you have been inseminated with donor sperm. This is to ensure that you are impregnated by the donor sperm and not by the sperm of your partner/boyfriend.

We recommend sexual activity after treatment because we believe it increases the chances of pregnancy by naturally stimulating the hormones that are involved in fertilisation and implantation and that are normally released during orgasm.

CAN I HAVE SEX WITH MY FEMALE PARTNER/GIRLFRIEND AFTER IUI?

Yes, you simply need to respect your pain threshold. We recommend sexual activity after treatment because we believe it increases the chances of pregnancy by naturally stimulating the hormones that are involved in fertilisation and implantation and that are normally released during orgasm.
